ASAT.NL’S XSARIUS BUYING GUIDE

Linux or Android?
Choose what suits the way you watch.

Do you mainly want familiar TV controls and built-in features? A Linux box could be the most convenient choice. Would you like to install several compatible apps and do more with your box? Android often makes more sense. Our advice below helps you decide; the exact model is still what matters.

LINUX

Designed for a familiar viewing routine.

Xsarius Linux OTT boxes focus on the applications supplied by the manufacturer. You use the TV interface and remote control provided. This can be convenient if you mostly use the same functions.

Why choose Linux?

  • A straightforward routine. If the built-in player does everything you need, there is less reason to switch between different apps and menus.
  • Less to set up yourself. You choose the box’s built-in set of features, without having to install or manage a collection of extra Android apps.
  • Extra features are still possible. Linux does not mean there are no apps. According to ASAT.NL, the Sniper 3 BT includes PremiumTV+ and preinstalled apps such as YouTube, YouTube Kids, Kodi and Speedtest. Always check the features of your particular model.

What are the limitations?

According to its product information, the Sniper 3 BT does not allow additional app downloads. You cannot install ordinary Android apps or APKs on it. New features and changes to built-in applications depend on the manufacturer. This may be limiting if you later need an app that is not included.

Our advice: choose Linux if simplicity and the included TV features matter more to you than adding extra apps. Before buying, check that the built-in features suit your needs.

ANDROID

More room for different apps.

A Xsarius Android box combines the supplied media player with support for other compatible Android apps. This gives you more freedom if you want to use different applications on the same television.

Why choose Android?

  • More ways to use your box. Think of compatible video, music and media player apps alongside the supplied application. Check availability and remote-control usability for each app.
  • Set it up your way. You can add supported apps and adjust settings to suit your needs. This is useful if your requirements change later.
  • A choice of hardware. With Android, you can choose more memory, storage or faster connections if your use calls for them. The Pure 4+ and Avant 4+ Ultra are examples with different specifications.

What should you keep in mind?

More apps can also mean more accounts, settings, storage use and updates. Not every phone app is easy to use with a TV remote. Nor does every streaming app work on every Android box.

Our advice: choose Android if you want more apps and options and are comfortable keeping them up to date. Start by listing the apps you cannot do without.

START WITH WHAT YOU NEED

Four points that make a difference.

Our buying advice: pay for the features you use. A bigger number on the box does not automatically make it a better fit.

1. Which apps do you really need?

Before buying, list your essential apps. Check with the app provider whether the exact device is supported and what picture quality is available. An Android label is not the same as confirmed Android TV or Google TV certification.

Widevine L1 or a 4K logo alone does not prove that every service will play in HD or 4K. There may be additional requirements for the device, app, subscription and television. For Netflix, see the official device support information; Google explains Play Protect certification . ASAT.NL does not supply or support streaming services.

2. Is Linux always faster and more stable?

No. A focused set of features can be convenient and responsive, but performance also depends on hardware, software and connectivity. A well-chosen Android box can run smoothly too. Compare specific models and ask for a demonstration of the controls.

Buffering may also be caused by the content source or your internet connection. Changing the operating system will not automatically fix that. Use an Ethernet cable where practical; otherwise, check WiFi reception where the box will be placed.

3. How important are memory and connections?

If you use several apps, extra RAM and storage may be useful. For a single application, the number of gigabytes says less about ease of use. Also compare Bluetooth remote support, USB for your own media, and connections to your TV or audio system.

For example, ASAT.NL lists 2 GB RAM, 32 GB storage and 100 Mbps LAN for the Pure 4+. The Avant 4+ Ultra product information lists 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, WiFi 6 and Gigabit LAN. Their value depends on how you use the box; higher specifications do not guarantee better content.

4. What affects long-term usefulness?

Check the update policy and software availability for the exact model. Both Linux and Android boxes rely on the manufacturer for system updates. A recent Android version at purchase does not promise a fixed number of years of updates.

On Linux, changes to built-in services may require a firmware update. On Android, apps’ minimum requirements may change. Choose a device whose current features suit you, and ask about the policy for future updates.

Which choice fits your situation?

01

Your TV already has your favourite apps.

A Linux box could be a sensible addition for the specific built-in TV function you need. You do not have to duplicate your smart TV’s apps on the box.

02

You want several apps on one box.

Start with Android, then check each app’s support for the exact model. After that, decide how much memory and storage, and which connections, you need.

03

Simple controls matter most to you.

Look at a Linux model and the TV interface on an Android model. Assess the remote control and the number of steps needed to reach your favourite function. That tells you more than the operating system’s name alone.

About this comparison: Linux here means Xsarius Linux OTT media streamers. It does not imply that a box has a satellite tuner, CI slot or Enigma2 software. Check those separately if you need satellite or cable reception.
